The Seasoned Traveler

Recipes and remedies using herbs, spices, and other natural ingredients from the world's pantry

About

IMG_0225One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”  ~ Henry Miller

At home I serve the kind of food I know the story behind.”  ~ Michael Pollan

On these pages, I hope to inspire you with recipes, stories, and snapshots of my life and travels. You will find here flavors and traditions influenced by the places I’ve lived and traveled, as well as just yummy dishes I’ve either created or tried and loved. I enjoy simple, rustic, and mostly nutritious cooking, especially when it involves slow simmering, roasting, or braising to bring out the most in flavor. I am particularly interested in learning from both old world wisdom and new scientific studies about the healing potential and nutritional benefits of spices, herbs, and other natural ingredients. At the same time, I do indulge in comforting sweets every so often, and, much like the French, I don’t fret about cream and butter. Whether you are just stopping by or joining me on my culinary journeys, thank you for visiting, and I hope you find a morsel or two of inspiration at The Seasoned Traveler.

A little about me066 (2):

I have worked as a journalist, a researcher, a translator, a teacher, a diplomat, and a stay-at-home mom. From a young age I was intrigued by other cultures and have been blessed with amazing experiences living abroad. Harvesting green tea on a remote Japanese island, cooking crepes in a Normandy farmhouse, savoring grilled fish on the Dalmatian coast, touring medieval wine villages in Italy, sleeping under the stars in the Omani desert and waking to cardamom coffee, enjoying a salt scrub at the Dead Sea, tasting freshly pressed olive oil in Tunisia, and meandering through spice markets in Morocco  — these are some of the many moments I cherish. My travels wouldn’t be as precious to me without the connections I’ve made along the way with friends and family, traditions, and wonderful food.

Bon voyage, bon appétit, and happy seasonings!   ~Laura
